About me

Hello UBC Arts 💜

My name is Joshua Kim (he/him) and I am currently a 4th-year Arts student running to become your AUS VP Arts Caucus!

For the past three years, I have been working around the clock behind the scenes for arts students' needs. You have elected me year after year to advocate on behalf of you in both the AUS and AMS councils and to work on projects and initiatives that would benefit you, like the Purple Card Program.

I have now gained the experience and knowledge in my time at student government to know how it works, the resources available for arts students, projects that require further work, and arts students' needs during their time at UBC. I have been a passionate voice for the past years and I am running to become your AUS VP Arts Caucus to focus on the two things I believe that I am best at: projects for students and advocating for students. Read more below on my platform and my experiences! :D

Advocacy

  • UTILISE the position as AMS Representative to ensure that the AMS is advocating from the university for greater funding for food security (e.g. AMS Food Bank, AUS Food Hub, Sprouts, more affordable housing on campus, and university funding for the AMS Health and Dental Plan

  • ENSURE that the AMS is advocating from the various levels of government for affordable living in Vancouver (e.g. revival of living wage policy), Skytrain to UBC, increased provincial funding for the University to reduce tuition, and for a permanent increase in work hours for international students (in effect until December 31, 2023)

  • FIGHT for the AMS to continue to integrate various equity and BIPOC-related documents and initiatives (e.g. ASAP, EAP, Indigenous Constituency, Indigenous Finance Guidelines) through collaborations with the newly formed AUS Indigenous Arts Student Committee

  • LEAD the effort to continue the AMS’ facilitation of strong interfaculty collaboration and improve student life in various ways (e.g. Interfaculty Cup, ensure high-quality AMS services, etc.)

  • SUPPORT the year representatives in advocating to the Faculty of Arts Council to revive the Arts Internship Program for a wider variety of opportunities to develop arts students’ career prospects

Representation

  • CONTINUE collecting data from the year-round surveys for the UYC and FYC to be accessible and gather data on a regular basis as points of reference on the priorities and needs of arts students of various year levels

  • EXPAND the year-round survey to give Arts Students a chance to provide feedbacks and things they want to see for their AMS Representatives in their advocacy work
Facilitate and ensure that a strong unified voice is present at the Faculty of Arts Council by supporting the year reps

  • CONTINUE to assign outreach directors to booth to promote UYC & FYC to increase campus awareness and presence of the two representative committees of AUS

  • START assigning outreach directors to research solutions to the various concerns of the arts students and bring it to AUS & Faculty of Arts council

  • SET the direction for the FYC to be more socialization-focused whereas the UYC to be more career development-focused while ensuring that both FYC and UYC work on both aspects
Ensure that the AMS representatives on Arts Caucus sits on an AMS standing committee

Trust

  • PLAN at least one virtual/in-person AUS Annual General Meeting to ensure that Arts students have the chance to keep the AUS executives accountable and let their voices heard

  • CODIFY in the AUS Code to set a procedure for the AUS Council to have the opportunity to keep all year representatives and AMS Representatives, accountable to Council throughout their term through a mid-term goals check-in

  • DIRECT year representatives to set and present annual goals for themselves to AUS Council to ensure that they are held accountable to the AUS Council for their performance

  • BOLSTER the roles of Collegia and First-Year Residence representatives to build a stronger community between the AUS FYC and both on- and off-campus first-year students

  • IMPROVE the ongoing surveys to streamline various concerns Arts students might have for the year representatives and AMS representatives into categories to smoothen the process of research and finding solutions to be presented

Student-Centred

  • SUPPORT the FYC’s Interdisciplinary Programs Representative to increase collaborations with Coordinated Arts Program & Arts One through the support of the AUS President as well as discussion with the Faculty of Arts

  • DIRECT FYC and UYC to collaborate with the AUS’ Academic portfolio to plan events on GoGlobal, Arts co-op, and UBC work-learn to allow Arts students in various year levels to be familiarized with the many opportunities to take advantage of

  • CONTINUE to encourage the AUS FYC to have an active role in the Interfaculty FYC to ensure the first-year students from all faculties get the chance to socialize

  • COLLABORATE with the Faculty of Arts on various events and programs that involve the Compass as well as Arts Peer Academic Coaches to connect Arts students, especially first-year Arts students, to the resources provided by the Faculty of Arts

  • SET up the Mentorship with Alumni Program (MAP) for upper-year Arts students in collaboration with the Faculty and AlumniUBC to connect Arts students with UBC alumni in various fields to help Arts students find their path forward beyond UBC

  • WORK with Centre for Student Involvement & Careers as well as the Academic Portfolio on various workshops and events catered towards upper-year Arts students on job-searching and career/professional development

  • CONTINUE and EXPAND the FYC’s Meet your Majors event to invite even more majors and minors students associations on campus to provide the opportunity for undeclared Arts students to truly explore their options
